Hi Bint, If it is considered a deviant sect for a bad reason, then I disagree with you. Bottom line: you're just doing namecalling. What objective factor can you cite that shows that Mutazila were polytheists? None..and your assessment is incorr...

Shalom Yigal and gam shana tova lcha,
That's wonderful news! I am currently writing a dissertation at the School of Oriental and African Studies, London, about Jerusalems inhabitants in 1914-1930 and am looking for information/photos/personal stories about life there. If you would be interested in helping me, perhaps we can be in touch by e-mail (205478@soas.ac.uk) and we can ask each other some more questions!
Thank you for responding and I hope we'll be in touch soon

Yigal,

Shalom.

I was wandering about on the site, and revisited the "American Friends of mepeace" discussion group. I saw that you mentioned you were doing a website for women's rights (Ramallah) and also that you had a project about a human rights curriculum. This post was in August 2008. So, I was just wondering if either of those things came about, because both of those things interest me, either to help if I have anything to contribute (I might or might not), or to know about the finished product, if they are finished.

Thanks! Hope your spring and summer will be great.

Rousseau and me:

"Man is born free, but everywhere he is in chains. Many of those chains are laws that violate people's Human Rights."
لقد ولد الانسان حرا و مع ذلك هو مكبل بالاغلال فى كل مكان. و كثير من هذة الأغلال هى عبارة عن قوانين تنتهك حقوق الانسان للشعب.

Cicero and me:
"Most foolish of all is the idea that all of the laws of any given country must be fair and just. They will not be fair if they violate anyone's Human Rights."
ان أغبى مقولة هى أن كل القوانين فى أى بلد يجب أن تكون عادلة لانها لن تكون كذلك طالما انتهكت حقوق الانسان لأى فرد.

Polybios and me:
"A state in which the majority of citizens is free to do whatever it pleases is not a democracy. Not if the majority feels free to violate the Human Rights of the minority."

If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them. … We should therefore claim, in the name of tolerance, the right not to tolerate the intolerant. –Sir Karl Popper

Gaza and Darfur: Some people seem to matter more than others

By SAVO HELETA

The recent conflict between Israel and Hamas has created fury around the globe, especially in the Muslim world. A number of countries in the Middle East and North Africa saw some of the largest demonstrations in their history condemning the killing of civilians and children in the military operation.

The Middle Eastern media, such as Al Jazeera, covered the conflict 24/7.

One has to wonder why the Darfur conflict has never received similar attention.

Since 2003, Sudan's wester… Continue

Lost in the blur of slogans

(from the San Francisco Chronicle)

by Ishmael Khaldi

Wednesday, March 4, 2009

For those who haven't heard, the first week in March has been designated as Israel Apartheid Week by activists who are either ill intentioned or misinformed. On American campuses, organizing committees are planning happenings to once again castigate Israel as the lone responsible party for all that maligns the Middle East.

Last year, at UC Berkeley, I had the opportunity to "dialogue" with some of the organizers of… Continue

Libyan intelligence officials torture four converts from Islam to Christianity

There may be "no compulsion" in religion (Qur'an 2:256),
but does it say anything about there being "no torture"?
And isn't Libya on the UN Human Rights commission??

"Libya Tortures Four Christian Converts From Islam,"

WASHINGTON -- International Christian Concern (ICC) has learned that Libyan intelligence officials have detained and tortured four Christians for converting from Islam. The Christians have been imprisoned fo… Continue

Positive Zionism

A story from my recent visit to Israel.

One of the schools I went to check out was a high school in Baka al Garbiyeh.
A friend brought me over to meet with the principal of the school, and I sat for about three hours with the man in his office, on the third floor. I went through my power point presentation on my laptop on a table in his office, and both he and the head of his English 'department' gave me wonderful feedback.
They offer you a lot of coffee in that many hours, and I had to borrow… Continue
