Democracy is not something that is either "on" or "off" in a country; it is a matter of degree. Certainly everyone in Iraq who cares about democracy (not just majority-rule, but liberal democracy, with protection for minority rights and individual freedoms) must know that rampant ethnic nationalism is the greatest danger to it there, yes? Maybe after a measure democratic self-governance has been established more securely in Iraq, it will be possible to turn the country's attention to the history of relationships among Iraq's different ethnic and religious communities, including Iraqi Jews.
If you ever learn that anything written by Mr. Khaon has been translated into English, please let me know. Thanks again.
Blessings,
-Hayyim
Can you tell me a little about the "real story" he tells about Iraqi Jews? I ask because I've heard very different, even contradictory, stories - but none from Iraqis.
I see you accidentally posted a couple of comments to your own page when you meant them as replies to comments from me and (I think) Yigal. You probably know this, but just in case: When you want to reply to a comment someone left you, click on the "Comment back" button directly under their comment to you. Any chance you could copy the one for me into a reply, so it shows up on my page? Thanks! (Feel free to delete this message if you want.)
i had make a mistake in my post ,when i said this is the first coverage on the subject ,it is the first on iraqi channals at lest ,but many had been done on arabic satlite channals ,as for your quiestion no the importance of the reports came from the point that they meet with jews from iraq and talk with them on their feelings to iraq,
the subject or iraqi jew leaving iraq is another file in iraq history (we do not a knowledge these things ever happen desk files ) along with the invasion of kewait or the destruction of baghdad by gangs when the US troops enter in april 2003 , we do not talk about it and if we did we smooth the reality to a less painful facts
unfortunatly our refusal to deal with facts and history is the reason why we still not establish real national reconcilation in iraq and why we deal with democracy and human rights as terms and words to say on TV other than facts or a way of life we need to adopt
of course people like me are pushed as far as possible from any place to talk about what happed and how to deal with it ? and prevent it from repeating to any one else in iraq or arbic world
in fact many of my iraq friends where very angry that i had wrote this blog in spit the fact that they all have copies of iraqi researcher RASHEED KHAON about iraq ethenic and religouse groups
which had disscuss the jewsh religon in iraq and had told the real story of iraqi jews ,it seem we had along why to become a deomcratic nation and we need alote of work to achive that
Thanks for your intriguing post about the recent Iraqi television coverage of the issue of property abandoned by Iraqi Jews. I'd like to know, did the coverage say anything about the circumstances under which the bulk of the Iraqi Jewish community emigrated to Israel?
I'm excited by the prospect of hearing your perceptions and thoughts about developments in Iraq and about the U.S. role there. I'm so grateful to mepeace for making encounters like this possible!
Blessings,
-Hayyim
Democracy is basically the rule of the people, and after years of suppression under Saddam regime it came to use as the selection of government officials by the people.
But what we discover day by day is that we need Liberal democracy as a representative democracy along with the protection of minorities, the rule of law, a separation of powers, and protection of liberties of speech, assembly, religion, and property.
People till now because of the fast changes in Iraq did not understand the essence of democracy, and still treat so elected officials as they treated the old officials in Saddam days, as immune people, especially the simple people who were under the impression that democracy will be the answer of thousands of religious suppression.
We need a democracy with the preservation from the danger of majority rule in oppressing freedom and liberty of the individual.
We need to make democracy the method of our life not only to chose officials but to give every one in Iraq majority or minority , religious or unreligious ,white ,black ,Arab ,Kurd ,Turkmen, muslim ,sabi, christian, jews, the chance in making life changing decisions that will create the base of democracy in the Middle East.
It would be very educational for us if you would post some of your thoughts in the discussions here on mepeace.
How do you think the challenges facing Iraqis are similar or dissimilar from those facing Israelis and/or Palestinians?
All the best from the other side of the world,
Yigal
Being able to meet and talk peace with folks like you - on the other side of the world - makes this site very special.
Thanks for sharing. It is my honor to have made your acquaintance.,
Yigal
I am actually from Wales and not England and our national sport is Rugby which I am sure you do not have in Iraq. Nonetheless, we are all football mad here. Unlike your country though we haven’t won a cup in a long time!
If you need to know anything more or want me to look up any organization here in the UK so I can help with your work you can message me anytime.
Cheers Max.
