Relationship Status:
Married
My personal story:
Born in New Jersey, USA.
Lived for 28 years in Miami.
An attorney working now in Oregon.
For the past 4 years or so I've been visiting Israel often (3-4x year).
Every time, I brought an extra suitcase or two full of clothes to give to people living in Israeli immigrant absorption centers.
In December '07, managed to get 10 duffel bags of winter coats to Israel to distribute to people from Darfur who are now located in Tel Aviv and Ashkelon, and also to Israeli-Ethiopians.
Have been active in a Florida-based multifaith peaceful-coexistence organization since 2001.
I've shot video on an IDF base, and been to visit people in their homes in Arab-Israeli towns. Among my friends are yeshiva people, guys who served in the IDF, Arab Israelis, and Egyptian, Bedouin, and Palestinians who lean toward Republicanism and Human Rights.
I am a cautious optimist.
Why I want peace:
Because it's better than the alternative.
Birthday:
July 19
Interests and activities:
Writing, Photography
Something you didn't know about me:
I started an English program in Israel to help Ethiopian Israeli students get into college
How I found mepeace.org:
online
What I want to achieve here:
Network.
Learn.
Teach.
Create goodwill.
Rousseau and me:

"Man is born free, but everywhere he is in chains. Many of those chains are laws that violate people's Human Rights."
لقد ولد الانسان حرا و مع ذلك هو مكبل بالاغلال فى كل مكان. و كثير من هذة الأغلال هى عبارة عن قوانين تنتهك حقوق الانسان للشعب.

Cicero and me:
"Most foolish of all is the idea that all of the laws of any given country must be fair and just. They will not be fair if they violate anyone's Human Rights."
ان أغبى مقولة هى أن كل القوانين فى أى بلد يجب أن تكون عادلة لانها لن تكون كذلك طالما انتهكت حقوق الانسان لأى فرد.

Polybios and me:
"A state in which the majority of citizens is free to do whatever it pleases is not a democracy. Not if the majority feels free to violate the Human Rights of the minority."

Part 4 - On the historical necessity of human rights

Part 4 The fruits of the toleration built by Muslims over the centuries in Spain were abundant. It is impossible in this focused discussion to do justice to the depth and degree of Muslim influence on the development of scholarship and enlightenment in Europe. The subject here is the effect of toleration and intolerance - human rights or the lack thereof - on social productivity. Suffice it to say for now that the period of Muslim toleration in Spain created one of the richest flowerings of cult… Continue

Part 3 - Ummayad Spain

Abd Ar Rahman I (?-788) was a (Syrian) Ummayad nobleman who escaped the Abbasid coup in Damascus (750) and arrived in Iberia in 755, where he would found a second Ummayad dynasty; this one based in Cordoba. Under his administration, Iberia, or as it became known in Arabic, Al Andalus, thrived as it had never done under the Visigoths. “The movement of Berbers from the Maghrib into Spain continued longer than Arab immigration from the east, and was probably larger. In time, too, part of the indige… Continue

How "Human Rights" are a historical necessity, and not just theory

The idea of Human Rights is meant to guarantee to every individual as much freedom as it is possible for a society to guarantee. Do not confuse failures in the execution with flaws in the basic premise. That basic premise was not originally the popular choice, and was only arrived at over the course of centuries, if not millennia, of trying other models. The thing is, all of those models failed. And failed miserably. As we will show, this is in keeping with the ideas of the great and first soci… Continue

Dear Yigal,

I just left this message on the Wall of the founder of this site. I’m sorry if you feel that I’m complaining all the time – but I can’t accept things like this and continue to write here…

Eyal,

I’m sorry if I seem to bother you again.

As the founder of this site I want to ask you if you really think that it is ok what this peacemaker says? Do you really agree that by this he’s making peace? Do you think that THIS is freedom of speech?

I have stopped to answer him.
I think – this time not of deleting my profile – but in stopping to come here at all, if this is tolerated by the owners of this site.

Can you please answer him?

Dear Marwa,

You wrote emotionally: "I think Alice should not change" and that she is "kind, open-minded, big-hearted, honest, and a supporters of human rights".

I normally essentially agree with you Marwa. In this case, I think that your assessment of her is demonstrably wrong. Very wrong. You demonstrate that Marwa by what you've written, and by when and how and why you wrote what you did.

You wrote: "What do you want more than that?"

I want people to stop inciting others, especially people like you, Marwa. Alice has demonstrably just done that by falsely claiming victimhood.

You wrote: "Why do you think she should stop?"

Because Marwa you have just demonstrated the insidious effect of what Alice achieves with all her emotional goodness. As result of that emotional goodness, you wrote this Marwa:
"I wish all Jews and Israelis change to become like her, kind, open-minded, big-hearted, honest, and supporters of human rights."

Now Marwa you really know that in plain English what that really means is:
Other than the few nice people like Alice, all Jews and Israelis ARE NOT kind, open-minded, big-hearted, honest, and supporters of human rights.
Now that is both demonstrably very bigoted and demonstrably untrue. But that is precisely the message that Alice continues to send!
Based upon what you've written here before I don't think that you really mean that, Marwa.

On the other hand, based on the number times some others here have repeated such slander, I think that some of what Alice writes implicitly and explicitly slanders Jews and Israelis. And so either her judgment is impaired or she is just trying to buy her way into what she sees as a Jew-hating heaven.

Now do you see Marwa why I so object Alice's simplistic and shallow (and self-serving) generalizations?

Do you now understand Marwa how Alice actually victimizes and so viciously attacks others? She attacks, first. Then she claims to the victim of the response she provoked. That is a classic passive-aggressive game some people here play even better than Alice.

Thank you Marwa for again speaking so plainly and honestly. You've helped me to respond effectively and thoroughly to your very relevant and well-intentioned questions and suggestions.

Keep them coming... I really think that you're the real future. Please continue to honestly question, think, and learn with an open mind and an open heart.

Be well... --PmR

Dear Yigal

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HOUSE OF PEACE

Who we are we:

House of Peace (HOP) was founded in 1997 as a grassroots women empowerment program managed by a professional Palestinian staff of women, Palestinian academic expertise, and enjoys the consultation of international organizations supporting and reinforcing democratic Palestinian society in the West Bank in general and in marginal areas in particular.

Mission Statement:

HOP is a non-profit, non-partisan, non-governmental Palestinian organization founded in the town of Kharbatha, working to build and strengthen the foundations of women’s participation in all aspects of Palestinian society and democracy awareness, specifically among Palestine women, and to develop Palestinian women organizations.

Objectives:

To work for the protection and promotion of the rights of children and the elimination of all forms of exploitation and discrimination against children;

To increase citizens’ awareness of women empowerment, ideas and institutions;

To develop women leadership skills and enhance the role of women in Palestinian society within their community;

To encourage local organizations to play a role in the process of public policy decision-making, in order to enhance woman participation through responsive and accountable governance;

To enhance the ability of Palestinians to face the challenges of building a democratic, participatory civil society. This is achieved basicly by working with various bodies such as civil society organizations, youth groups, women's and professional associations, in private sector organizations as well

;

To promote avtive and constructive peace building processes with Israeli and international partners. to sustainthe peace process that requires the development of tools for promoting mutual understanding .

HISTORY OF HOP

In June 2005 HOP formally established itself as an independent Palestinian organization and was registered in Ramallah on

May 2, 2005. HOP is registered as a non-profit organization in the Palestinian Authority to the Law of NGOs signed by President Arafat in February 2000....

What We Do

The activities of the HOP are focused on the following areas:

WOMEN EMPOWEMENT (through discussion sessions and workshops);

Training and capacity building;

Town Hall meetings;

Civil work;

Studies and research

How We Work:

HOP is committed to principles of quality, transparent organization and the empowerment of all people to contribute to women's growth in social, legal, economic and political matters.

The Management
Ms. Aziza Arman - Chairperson of HOP
Mr aziz Arman - Director of HOP
Mr Abdulrahim khalil PRs coordinator of HOP
Staff of HOP
Safa Qandeel_____ Accountant
Nosayba Hamoda____ Project Coordinator
Sawsan Ayad____ Secretary
Ansaf Omar_-- Volunteers

Location and reason this area was chosen to work in:

Our center is based at the town Kharbatha Al Harthia, a district of the city of Ramallah (situated about 25 km away). We have chosen this town because of its suffering from ignorance and shortcomings in services, also because it is surrounded by 12 other villages and is easily accessible from them. The inhabitants of this vulnerable area reach 55,000. The majority of the people here are peasants, living in abject poverty.

We wittness some problems that threaten stability and prosperity of people there, such as weakness of public services, economic dumping, violence against women and children including 'honor' crimes, forced pregnancy, lack of health care.

We firmly believe that education, raising awareness and improving the economic circumstances in this area are among the most effective means to regain dignity and constructive role in building a local civil society.

Hope call for action

Sometimes one person inspires a movement, or his words do some decades later. Sometimes a few passionate people change the world by starting a mass movement that stirs up millions. The same outrage or idea can bring about change – like a change of weather. These transformations begin in the imagination. As hope. To hope is to gamble – to bet on your future possibilities. An open heart and uncertainty are better than gloom and safety. Hope can be dangerous but it is the opposite of fear, and gives one better possibilities for life.
