I grew up in Oak Park, IL, which is known for it's diversity.
One of my mom's favorite things to say it that she never knew 'what' my friends were until I would bring them home and introduce them to her.
I had two friends growing up. One was a reform Jew that was the daughter of my kindergarten teacher (and went to the other temple in our town) and the other was a Palestinian Muslim girl from a devout family.
I grew up with friends from all backgrounds, all countries, and I was invited into their homes and worlds, and they were invited into mine. I know, that when you take two people out of their situation and you can say things like "you both are parents of daughter, or children the same age", or "you both love the same football team" most-likely, even for a few minutes, these two people can see past their hate for one another, and see each-other as people. The most important thing to remember, is that we're all people.
Why I want peace:
I want peace because I don't believe that all this hate is needed in the world.
Yes, in the Middle East we have a problem.
Yes, there are two "peoples" in one strip of land, but there has got to be a way to solve it. Lord knows if I have the way, because I surely don't, but... there has to be a way to solve it.
I have lost friends in the Israeli army, and I have seen others change while in it.
I know friends in America who can't go back to their homes in Palestine because they will never be able to leave again. I know others in Palestine who can not leave because they do not have passports and visas and the rights to move.
My friend's house was rocketed, and luckily rebuilt by money donated by a government. Other's houses were not rebuilt.
With all the stress of everyday life, why must we add this on to our children?
My belief is that those who bring children into this world should try and make it better. And before I being my children into this world, I hope to being to make it better.

What I want to achieve here:
My spirit, because sometimes out in the real world... the want for peace is just beaten by the want for hate, and all you can do is feel sorry for the person who has more hate in their body than anything else.
